Background

Domestic loom project was created and designed by Plural Design company. The aim of this project was providing convenience and effectivity of looms for weavers through a modern design.

According to the information which the design team has collected by interviewing weave specialists, most of the Thai handlooms are built with thick and heavy woods. In addition, the designs are not accurate owing to the handmaking process. That means the looms are too heavy, and weaved fabric does not have a same size. These facts pointed out the problems which weavers have faced. Therefore, the design team developed handlooms’ structure with the ideas of modernism.

The design concept was lightweight, simple, and small sizes. Instead of using thick woods, metals were considered as a main material for structures. The loom was produced with oak brown colors for modern looks.

We also considered about ergonomic design for providing the comfort feeling during weaving periods. For instance, the chair was able to be adjusted its height. This chair design provide comfort to wide range of height of users.

During the design process, the team has received precious advice from weaving professors who teach in Thammasat university, majoring in Textile and Fashion design.
